Day 22, Sun, Sept 1st

Now in the Ohio River.   We

Woke up early this morning to a bit of breeze which turned our boat around, watched for a while as the wind came up some more, then decided that it would be better if we got into the ohio river so we pulled anchors, or tried to – could not get one up It was apparently hooked on a log or something Had to cut rope and leave it.     this happens and we have an extra, glad it was not our real big one.

went downriver a mile to ohio and started up when a thunderstorm hit with a lot of rain, tapered off after a few minutes and a mile upstream, but canoe had a lot of water and was riding low so pulled in between some parked barges out of wind and waves to bail. then tried to find a docking place near Cairo, il. to get gas. went past a boat ramp, but waves were breaking on it pretty well, went farther but found nothing, back to ramp, and waves were down so beach and someone came by and took Milt for gas. then when we tryed leaving, we found our spark plugs were again fouled, so changed them also, and headed back upstream.

Very slow going against heavy current and wind came up strong with large waves so we finally pulled over and beach to let waves go down. will probably stay here overnite. we are across the ohio river from Mound City, Ill.

Milt bailing out canoe was a lot of water at start.

Well you did try to ready the boat for any weather. How did the ‘Brush Creek Belle’ handle herself, I mean other that water in the canoe?
